Seasons

As water warms up in the spring, catfish start to feed. We call this the pre-spawn period and it can be on of the best times to catch catfish. During spring fish are motivated by the need to feed and to pack on strength for the spawn season that is coming up. During spawn, fishing will slow down some, as males are busy protecting their nest and females are laying eggs. Remember, not all catfish will spawn at the same time, so you can continue to catch good cats through the spawn season.

We then move into summer it starts to get hot and fish slow down. Fishing can be good in the summer but you need to put your bait in front of the fish, they don’t seem to move as far when it gets hot.

In the fall catfish seem to get active again as water temps start to cool. We think that catfish know winter is coming, so like a bear, they start feeding heavy to pack on fat for the winter. The fall season can be on of the best for catching large fish. In our opinion, fall is second, only to the spring pre-spawn.

Then in the winter fish continue to slow down as water temperatures fall. This is when we put away our gear and wait for spring to return. We hear stories of people catching cats through the winter, but we haven’t had those results here in Kansas.
